Burger – $15 ($4 for bacon)

Eamon – 3.75/5

  • A standard combination of lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles and the patty stuffed between a lightly toasted bun with a splash of their superior sauce; added bacon to it to spice (or salt) it up a little bit. And in return, it was quite the standard burger. From top to bottom, the bun was toasted just that little bit to have the crunch on the outside and softness on the inside. Two leaves of iceberg lettuce and a thick slice of tomato meant bites containing a chunky bit of salad had an overpowering tomato taste. The cheese could be quite heavy and the combination it made with the superior sauce could lead to a very creamy experience. The patty, around 125g cooked medium, still had that light pink tinge on the inside and brought a robust flavour with it. I did not taste anything out of the ordinary which I could attribute to the superior sauce. There was nothing outstanding about the burger that could push it to a 4.

  • First impressions of the burger were great. Points for presentation and layout which had the burger sitting comfortably in a small white box. Initial bites tasted good, the bun was soft, meat patty was cooked well and it looked to be a winner. However after progressing along, the burger taste became stagnant and felt like it lacked their unique ‘superior sauce’. The bacon didn’t provide much; its charred, salty taste overpowered the burger and definitely wouldn’t have been missed. Overall a solid burger but with flaws in its sauce and a pricetag quite steep. Also I was personally satisfied with my pickle count however others here may disagree.

  • The first three bites were mouth watering and absolutely delicious. I wasn’t too hungry that day but I dug into the burger with a relish. The meat was slightly more well done than I was used to, but the melted cheese and bacon combination meant I hardly noticed. The pickles were delicious (I could’ve done with more) and the tomato to lettuce to patty ratio was just right. In hindsight the bacon did not add too much to the overall enjoyment of the burger. It was crispy and smokey but eventually it became too salty. Upon closer inspection I detected a lemony zest in the ‘superior sauce’ but while eating the burger I didn’t notice it particularly. All in all the burger was great, albeit a bit pricey (esp. with the bacon). I would definitely go back if I was in the general area.

Sides – $8 Mash and Gravy, $7 Large Fries, $2 per sauce, $6 Homemade Ice Tea, $7 Honeycomb Milkshake

  • Tip: if you order mash and gravy with fries as well, do not eat all the gravy with the fries. The mash with the gravy, an excellent combination. The small chunks you get in the mash is much easily more palatable with a healthy spoonful of gravy as opposed to by itself; but when your mates use all the gravy to dip their fries into, the mash stays quite lumpy and can be a bit hard to eat. The fries though, quality fries. They still taste of potato after being fried and they do give it out a fair shake of the salt. I’m of the opinion that they did not need the two sauces we ordered, jalapeno mayo and a normal mayo (who orders two mayos…). I chose to get myself their honeycomb milkshake, the main culprit of the lowered rating. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I imagine if you just blended up some Crunchy Nut, you would get a similar result. Overall, a solid showing in the sides category.

  • Straight up, the fries are a winner. 5/5 for the fries. Wrapped in paper and showered in gold chunks of your typical takeaway chicken salt, the fries brought back loads of nostalgia and were amazing. Perfect for sharing amongst a group ($7 for a large was perfect for the 3 of us), I highly recommend them alongside your burger. Only choose 1 sauce would be my advice.
  • Much like the burger, the mash and gravy showed promise initially, however across time proved to be nothing special. Solid when dipped with fries but overall a bit grainy with chunks of potato still apparent, and I personally can’t justify it’s exorbitant price ($8). Some will love and others won’t.

  • I have a policy of staying away from the sides before the burger is finished. This is a strategy to keep my stomach space free for full burger enjoyment before moving on. I did not have much of the fries – what I can recall is that they were tasty and salty, a perfect combination of both. It wasn’t too much different from MacDonalds, at least from what my taste buds were telling me. We were in a ‘treat yourself’, splurging mood and ended up getting two sauces, Jalapeno mayo and normal mayo. This was definitely not necessary, just good old tomato sauce would’ve done the job or even dipping the fries in the gravy if you get mash.
  • The mash was a good consistency, not too smooth and not too lumpy, and the gravy was delicious. It certainly met all expectations – especially when eaten in combo with the fries. Slightly less creamy than the mash at Mary’s in Newtown but good nonetheless.

Atmosphere

Eamon – 3.9/5

  • It’s an awesome place. Interesting comparison between the team of chefs in their whites and the casual dress of all the customers. Locals turning up in their singlets and thongs for a taste of the some quality food, old school music blasting but quiet enough so you can still talk, plenty of space to sit down and enjoy yourselves. Now that I’m listing all these positives, I feel it’s unfair to knock points off just because it’s a bit out of the way but it was decided that it would be part of the rating. Definitely as relaxed as the takeaway shops of old.

  • The place is super nostalgic, rocking the classic tuckshop look that we all grew up loving. Super basic store layout; counter, large frying vats behind it and basic seats and tables. The glowing pink neon sign was my favourite aspect however some of the ceiling decorations (birds) didn’t feel like they matched the gritty tuckshop style. Don’t come in expecting fancy, cafe-esque atmosphere because that’s not what you’re going to get. Location is not the best and you’ll need a set of wheels but worth checking out if your in the area.

Melissa – 4/5

  • Squishy, wide and comfortable seating. Wide tables and cool aircon. Could have spent a lot longer in here, especially with the continual aircon on a hot summer’s day. We sat by the window so the lighting was fine, but further into the store did look considerably dimmer. Nice wooden decor and a classic neon light were great touches that fit in well with the store. Bit of a trek if you don’t live locally, but heaps of parking spots. (If you park under a tree, you may find yourself visiting a DIY car wash later on.)

Eamon – 3.5/5

  • There is a separation between the feel of the place, the food and the prices attached. A takeaway place, serving tasty fare from quality produce, at a premium. Is the food good? Absolutely. Is it pricey? Absolutely, too.

James – 3.5/5

  • Highly recommend if your in the area (Fairfield/Cabra) but be prepared to spend more than you would at your average burger joint.

Melissa – 3.5/5

  • Very, very delicious. Pricing and location brought down the rating. I basically asked myself ‘would I come back’ and these two factors definitely influenced it a lot. The burger itself is delicious so I recommend all burger enthusiasts come down and try it at least once.
