Yakitori Yurippi, Crows Nest

With a hankering for Japanese yakitori and a desire to explore the eats of Crows Nest, we headed to Yakitori Yurippi, to try their variety of home-style skewered meats and veges. The shop is quite small, so make a booking or get there early if you don’t want to wait in line as they can’t sit that many people, especially with COVID restrictions. With a seasonal menu, you can expect fresh ingredients and plenty of variety, so best enjoyed with a mates and a few drinks.

James: 4.25 out of 5 – Closest you’ll get in Sydney to yakitori in Japan

I know it’s a cliche to compare Sydney’s Japanese food with what you can get in Japan, but it’s hard not to! Having just had really good yakitori in Asakusa in February, I was craving another delicious yakitori experience, so had to give Yurippi a try after hearing positive things from others. And I certainly enjoyed myself! Once again, probably making the mistake of overordering, I signed myself up to try as many dishes as I could (not all dishes were captured in pictures) and there were some clear stand outs for me.

While I didn’t find the traditional chicken yakitori amazing here, I really enjoyed the wagyu beef, pork belly and pork jowl. They were tender, full of flavor and with a nice level of smoked, charring taste you want from skewered meats. The chicken skin and fish were decent but I’m okay to with giving them a a miss next time. The fried options as side dishes were enjoyable, I particularly liked the gyzoa and root chips which are great options to share around the table and enjoy a beer alongside.

We also tried their miso & soy rice balls which were wrapped up similar to onigiri but these were fairly average and didn’t come until the very end of our meal when we were completely stuffed from all the skewers. The rice could be worth trying if you’re interested but I wouldn’t actively recommend it.

Overall I really enjoyed Yurippi. Since they cook their meats over coal and inside the small restaurant, you can see and smell the smokiness so a word of warning that it will get all over your clothes. Grab some mates, that way you can try as many things on the menu and have some drinks to go and you’ll enjoy a good (maybe costly) time at Yakitori Yurippi.
