Plain Folks, Wentworth Point

A cold, rainsoaked Autumn’s day did not stop us from venturing out and finding our next feed to review. After much deliberation and brainstorming we decided on the newly developed Wentworth Point as our target destination and Plain Folks was the new burger joint that popped up, so naturally we had to give it a try.

Located in the middle of a flurry of apartments, Plain Folks serves up korean-inspired burgers and your typical sides like fries and thicksakes.

Location: 1 Burroway Rd, Sydney Olympic Park NSW 2127

K.F.C (Korean Fried Chicken) Burger

James: 4 out of 5 – There’s nothing plain about these Plain Folks’ burgers

I tried the two chicken burgers; the K.F.C and Hot Chic and both were quite unique, flavourful & succulent burgers. The K.F.C featured korean fried chicken (sorry no 11 secret herbs & spices) combined with house slaw, cucumber, pickles onion sauce and garlic mayo on a brioche bun. The fried chicken was juicy and succulent with a fairly generous serving that protroded outside the burger bun, as pictured. While the fried chicken itself was a bit salty, it worked well with the slaw, pickles and garlic mayo to balance the flavours out.

The Hot Chic was a suprisingly enjoyable burger as I don’t typically enjoy pineapple in burgers, but in this case the pineapple was not too sweet or overpowering and combined well with the chilli garlic sauce, jalapeno and chicken. Instead of fried, the chicken in this one was a chilli grilled marinade which was also really juicy and packed quite a bit of flavour that I wasn’t expecting. The chilli sauce really brought this burger together and was at a mild spice level with a bit of a kick, even though the menu suggested 3 chilli symbols (can definitely be much hotter).

Finally the sides were your standard chips/sweet potato wedges that you can find at most burger joints, nothing to rave about here while also not disappointing. The chicken box (pictured below) was their version of loaded fries with their signature PF sauce, cheese, bacon and pieces of fried chicken thigh. A good addition if you’re still hungry after your burgers and best for sharing amongst friends, however if you do choose to get it, I’d probably avoid falling into the trap of making meals out of your burgers, where you’ll get regular fries.

Melissa: 3.5 out of 5 – Stick with the traditional wagyu

When I visit a burger place for the first time, I traditionally go for their classic burger to gauge how well their standard beef burgers are before I foray into the world of chicken and other special burgers. The Plain Folks burger was cooked well, good ratio of cheese, tomato and lettuce and their Plain Folks sauce complimented the medley of salty and sweet very well. Overall a satisfying and delicious burger, with bonus points for no additional cost for adding in bacon.

I also ordered their king prawn burger (available in limited numbers) for something more adventurous. While the house made prawn patty went well with the sauce, the addition of prawn aioli eventually became overwhelming. The first few bites were tasty but halfway through the burger I began the crave the saltiness and meatiness of the beef burger way more.

For sides we added on chips for a meal, ordered some fairly standard sweet potato wedges, and went all in with the chicken box. Slices of fried chicken laid on top of a bed of fries with the Plain Folks sauce and a shallot and onion sauce. Personally the shallot and onion sauce was too sweet (I am not a huge sweet tooth) and overwhelmed the taste of the fries. The chicken was adequately soft and not overcooked but overall wouldn’t recommend ordering this – stick to adding traditional fries with your meal and good old tomato sauce.

King Prawn Burger

Overall, a great burger joint for locals in the area to fill up on their cravings for a well balanced, delicious burger. Prices were very reasonable and we’d definitely be back to check out some of the burgers we couldn’t fit in on the day (I’m eyeing up the double truffle burger right now). Stamping the logo into the buns was also an interesting/nice touch!
