Tuna Tataki
Lamb Cutlet & Prawn

James: 4.5 out of 5 – An awesome experience, hard to fault any of the dishes and changed my views on teppanyaki.

With my limited experience of teppanyaki – where a lot of food was thrown at us lol, I kept expectations tempered going into this. We opted for degustation menu B for $78 per person, featuring 5 meat and seafood dishes, dessert not included. To kick things off we had a Tuna Tataki salad, a very refreshing starter to cleanse the palette. The tuna was soft and melted in the mouth perfectly and the salad mixed with the sauce and haloumi made for a nice combo. The prawn-cracker-like layer on the bottom acted like a shell and gave a nice crisp to the dish.

This was followed by the Lamb Cutlet & Prawn as pictured. The prawn was a standout dish of the night, a sweet and salty combo that fell off the shell and melted in the mouth. The lamb was also cooked perfectly, tender and with a nice garlic buttery sauce to go with.

Chilli Pork Bao Buns
Salmon & Calamari

The Chilli Pork Bao Bun was my highlight and favourite dish of the entire menu. All elements on the plate – pork, tabouli, garlic and teriyaki sauce are mixed together before tucked in the fluffy bao and eaten like a bun. Great combination of flavours here, some kick from the pork, creaminess from the garlic sauce, sourness from the tabouli and saltiness from the teriyaki. An awesome dish I would go back for in a heartbeat.

This complemented well with the next dish, Salmon & Calamari in a delicious buttery sauce. The salmon and calamari were cooked well, but its the sauce that champions this dish. A buttery and creamy texture with a hint of citrus from lemons really worked well with the seafood which was not seasoned too much. Another stand out dish I reallyt enjoyed.

Steak & Scallops

The final dish was Steak & Scallops, an enjoyable dish to end the meal. My steak and scallops were cooked well, however the scallops seemed inconsistent across others with some being slightly overcooked. This worked well with a miso mayo sauce that added some creaminess and although there was a mushroom, this could have worked with some more veg, potentially some greens would have elevated this dish.

Overall I really enjoyed Daikoku Teppanyaki Restaurant which featured some real winning dishes as part of their set menu B. I’ll defnitely be back to try their set A as well other items on the menu like ramen and sushi. I’d highly recommend giving it the teppanyaki a try at least once, take some friends and family and watch the chef work their magic right in front of your eyes.
