Wonton Warrior, Burwood

I recently discovered another local gem in Burwood, Wonton Warrior on Burwood Road. I could be late to the party but this small hole in the wall eatery serves up delicious handmade noodles and dumplings. Decently priced with authentic flavours, it is another go-to place in Burwood for some comforting home made Chinese food.

Signature braised beef noodle soup – $14.80

The signature braised beef noodle soup was really delicious, the meat tender and soft and the handmade noodles had a satisfying chew. The soup was salty and comforting, with star anise and other herbs giving the dish its signature taste. The added addition of the boiled egg was nice too – I hadn’t seen this before as part of the dish. The hero was definitely the handmade noodles here, I would say this was better than the braised beef noodle soup at Xi-An Eatery.

For sides we ordered the pan fried Nanjing beef dumplings in beef, which were a nice change from the pork dumplings we always order. They were juicy and filled with soup. Highly recommend ordering this as a side.

The prawn toast on the other hand, was way too deep fried and oily. The bread used was sandwich/sliced bread and too thin to withstand all the oil from the deep fryer. I didn’t finish all of this as it tasted way too greasy from the oil which had completely soaked into the bread.

Prawn with pork and mushroom wontons – $13.80

The only wonton dish I ordered was the prawn with pork and mushroom wontons. The skin was light and silky, perfectly made wontons. The filling didn’t really do it for me – the mushroom, prawn and pork mix had too many clashing flavours going on together. The mushrooms they used gave the filling a distinctly bitter taste, so I would opt for a different filling in the wonton. The soup was clear and very light and clean – it could use with a touch more salt/seasoning but would probably be soothing if you were feeling a bit under the weather.

Housemade Dandan noodles – $13.80

Last but not least, the housemate Dandan noodles. Topped with a healthy amount of pork mince, a thicker sesame and chilli oil soup topped with peanuts and fresh coriander. Despite the colour, this dish was not too spicy for me. The handmade noodles had the same chew as in the braised beef noodle soup. The sesame sauce and chilli oil blended well together, coating the hand pulled noodles nicely. A really rich and well seasoned dish, I liked the addition of the sesame and peanut sauce into the soup. Would also highly recommend ordering this dish when visiting!

Melissa: 3.5/5, another cosy restaurant serving up delicious handmade noodles. Doesn’t quite take the place of Xi-An Eatery in my heart but another restaurant serving up some authentic Chinese dishes

Definitely would be back here for the Dandan and braised beef noodles alone. Admittedly there is so much good Chinese cuisine in Burwood, places like Wonton Warrior tend to get lost in the variety available on Burwood Road, but I have been trying to branch out from just heading to Xi-An Eatery or Xi Bay all the time.
