Is Five Guys worth five stars?

Location: Across North America. Specific location of this Five Guys: 1703 Richmond St, London, ON N5X 3Y2

Five Guys. You’ve probably heard of it before and for a good reason. Straight up: it gets the job done.

An American fast food chain that begun in 1986, Five Guys has conitnued to rapidly expand and satisfy the burger cravings of North Americans. I first heard about it in that autotuned version of one of DaymDrop’s reviews and oh man, I had never seen a man so passionate about a burger (wow it’s been 5 years).

Burger – 4.5/5

There are 4 burger options: hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger and bacon cheeseburger, each with the option to pick one patty (little) or two. Toppings and sauces are chosen from a variety of options. I opted for the little cheeseburger as this was my second time having Five Guys (first time in Times Square) and believed one patty would be more enjoyable – which personally, it was.

First of all, a word of warning would be not to go in expecting anything fancy or exotic, because you will be disapppointed. The burger is simple; it gets the job done and you walk out with no complaints. It’s tasty, fresh, compact and easy to eat – the perfect attributes for a solid feed and when you’re looking to satisfy that craving. Taste of the burger comes down to what you choose to add as your toppings but I can say that it tasted of fresh ingredients which is a bonus is my book.

In both my experiences the bun and meat patty itself have been great. The bun is lightly toasted giving it that soft, fluffy texture and has sesame seeds – a bonus in the eyes of many. Five Guys boasts about their use of peanut oil to cook the patty and fries and they have a right to do so. The patty is superb, cooked perfectly so that it’s still moist but not too soft or mincy. It’s got flavour and is all you can ask for to go with a fantastic combination of simple, fresh ingredients. Don’t be intimidated by the cheese either – it sits comfortably in the burger and is neither overpowering nor too subtle that it feels like it doesn’t exist. Next step -> trying the bacon cheeseburger. Bonus points for the foil which keeps the burger hot, and intact – it won’t break down or drop out ingredients.

Although it may pack a higher price point Five Guys’ burgers are a winner and I will definitely be visiting over and over again when I get the chance.

Fries – 4/5

The fries are also well known at Five Guys and I can understand why. A great complement to the burger that completes the meal especially when dipped with ketcup. Fresh cut potatoes as they call them, you can pick Five Guys style of Cajun and can’t go wrong with either. Nicely seasoned, they’re also generous with serving sizes, filling the cup (little, regular, large) as well as an extra scoop straight into the famous brown bag. I recommend splitting a large fries with others to get the most bang for your buck.

Overall – 4.5/5

You’ll find that Five Guys doesn’t do ‘meals’ or ‘combos’ and have to pay for each item seperately, racking up that price point to $12 ~ $16, but I’ll say it’s worth it. Five Guys will provide a solid feed that satiates any burger cravings. It doesn’t beat around the bush and serves up a simple, but elegant burger that is customisable and guaranteed to satisfy. I highly recommend giving trying it if you see one around.
