Sekka Dining Part 2, St Leonards

With 1 member of Feeds For Three having already tried Sekka – go back and find the original post – it was only right for myself (James) who had not been before, to give it a go and see what all the hype was about. Located on the busy Pac Highway, Sekka is located at the bottom of a new apartment building that overlooks St Leonards, and is within easy walking distance from the train station and to Crows Nest.

Wagyu Tartare – $22
Chicken Wing Gyoza – $15

James: 4.5 out of 5 – Sekka has become a new favourite for ramen in Sydney.

To kick off our dining experience, we ordered 2 starters, the Wagyu Tartare, that came highly recommended by others, as well as the Chicken Wing Gyoza, which we heard was a bit hit & miss. Firstly the Wagyu Tartare did not disappoint at all and was the stand out of the night out of all dishes – even compared to the ramen! The combination of truffle mustard, fried enoki and potato was delicious as it added lots of flavor to the raw beef and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I highly recommend trying this! Although portion size doesn’t look huge, split it between at least 2 people, as it can get a bit sickening if you try to solo eat it.

With the chicken wing gyoza, I had set my expectations quite low but in the end I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this. The truffle & prawn gyoza inside was juicy and tasty, combining well with the crispy skin of the chicken wing which was semi-boneless inside making it very easy to eat. What really won me over was the dollop of yuzu aioli which came on the plate and added a citrus-cy but garlic-y addition to the already tasty wing. Something different and unique which I also recommend trying (may start to see a pattern here).

Classic Tonkotsu Ramen – $18

Onto the ramen which is what we really came for – I got the Classic Tonkotsu Ramen and really enjoyed it. The broth was full of delicious pork/tonkotsu flavor and came out piping hot, while tasting clean and not too oily or heavy like you might find elsewhere. The noodles were thin and super soft just the way I like it, unfortunately there is no customisation options for noodle strength as far as I’m aware so hard noodle lovers may be disappointed. The pork belly chashu wasn’t too bad, and could have been more charred and flavorful but overall still a really good ramen and one of the better tonkotsu ramens I’ve had in Sydney. Only minor letdown was portion size! There’s not a whole lot in there for $18 and while you can get extra noodles, it’s going to set you back an extra $3.

The Shio & Hojicha Duck Ramen I was only able to sample but both piqued my interest and are definite contenders to be picked next time I visit Sekka.

Shio Ramen – $18
Hojicha Smoked Duck Ramen – $22

Overall I really enjoyed Sekka as you can probably tell from my rating and constant recommendations, but I’d have to say it’s one of the better ramen places I’ve tried in Sydney. Not only was the ramen really good, but also the starters so I’d highly recommend grabbing your partner or some friends and giving Sekka in St Leonards a go. Definitely make a reservation because it’s a small restaurant and fills up quick!
