Betty’s Burgers, Melbourne CBD

This week one third of Nerd Club hits up the Melbourne burger scene to bring you a review of Betty’s Burgers and Concrete Co. Modelled after the classic 50’s burger shack, the neon lights and red checkered tablecloths were certainly very inviting in the Melbourne winter. A defining feature of Betty’s Burgers was their range of desserts, called ‘Concretes’. Unfortunately, because of limited stomach capacity, I did not try out any of their desserts 😦

Burger – Betty’s Classic $10

Betty’s Classic contains Angus beef, leafy lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and the Betty’s special sauce. Options to add bacon and pickles for $5 was also available. The Angus beef was juicy and tender, the tomato and lettuce were crisp and fresh and the entire burger was well balanced with special sauce and cheese. The balance of all the flavours was excellent with the saltiness of the meat and sauce offset by the tomato and lettuce. The bread was supremely buttered – more buttered than I’ve seen so far. As the burger consumption progressed, the bread began to break apart. As a messy eater already, this was no good – eventually there was barely any bread to soak up the sauce and meat.

Sides – French Fries $5, Betty’s Special Sauce $2

The French fries were ordered as the side to go along with the burger. They were crunchy, tasty and did the job. A nice touch was leaving the potato skins on giving it that little bit of authenticity compared to a lot of other fries at burger joints. The special sauce was a blend of pickles and mayonnaise and pepper (?). I’m not 100% sure of the recipe but it was delicious and went well with the fries.

Drinks – Strawberry Thick shake $8

There are a whole range of thick shakes available and I went with a classic strawberry shake. It wasn’t overly sweet, well balanced and tasted nice. Quite similar to a Maccas thick shake, except it was $8, which why the rating is so low. Overall a nice dessert substitute if you aren’t going to get any of their concretes, but not necessary a compliment to the burger.

Conclusion

Betty’s Burgers is a great burger joint for the price and ambience. When I went, the place was pumping great music and has a range of salads, sides and desserts to suit any palette. It is definitely a franchise that I can trust to deliver delicious burgers. It’s an easy place to come back to again and again if you’re on the hunt for a nice burger at a reasonable price.

Overall the Betty’s Classic was delicious, but not overwhelmingly so. I’d say the food is definitely better than your average restaurant, but there was nothing that really stood out to me from other burger joints like Mary’s in Newtown, Sydney or even Mister Gee’s and their truffle burger. That being said, now that Betty’s Burgers has opened up in Darling Harbour, Sydney I will probably be back to try out their desserts.
