Morning Owl, Auburn

Tucked away in an industrial area between Auburn and Regents Park, Morning Owl cafe is easy to miss if you’ve never heard of it before! But even so, during lunch time on the weekend it was certainly busy with groups of people enjoying their coffee and brunch in the nice sunny weather.

Avocado Stack – $18

James: 3.5 out of 5 – A reasonably enjoyable cafe experience, good to visit if you’re in the area and after some brunch.

The Avocado Stack was exactly as the name suggests, a stack of sourdough bread with smashed avo, haloumi, feta and eggs of choice (we got sunny side). This dish was pretty good! The sourdough bread was not hard or chewy like I’m used to with sourdough and it blended well with the avo. There was a nice zest from lemon juice in the avocado which I really appreciated and enjoyed and the haloumi balanced it with that cheesy saltiness. Portion size was a bit small for $18 but I guess that’s just what you pay for in Sydney these days, but overall a solid dish.

The Maple Beef Burger was also enjoyable, carried by the maple sauce itself. While the beef patty was a bit dry, the lightly toasted bun and sweet, maple sauce were the standouts. The bacon and lettuce was as expected but really its the sauce that makes the dish. For $17 you’re probably better off going to an actual burger joint but for those that aren’t too fond of traditional brunch/cafe food, this isn’t a bad option either.

For those who frequent cafes (unlike me), your standards may be much higher than mine so set your expectations if you plan to visit the Morning Owl. While it’s a decent cafe with a extensive range of options for food and drink, it’s unlikely to blow your mind or be the best experience you ever had, so I’d recommend only if you’re nearby or in the area.
