Choji Yakiniku, Chatswood

There always seems to be an element of sophistication involved in Japanese bbq and that definitely rang true throughout our experience at Choji Yakiniku. From the perfectly cut and marbled meats, to the range of premium wagyu (including Kagoshima 12+) available, this was definitely a delicious dining experience.

Melissa: 4.5 out of 5 – Shoutout to the perfectly concocted sauces

Delicious Japanese BBQ and definitely up there in terms of meat quality compared to other BBQ places (Korean or otherwise). We ordered meats from varying price points, ranging from the top tier melt-in-your-mouth wagyu to the meats with more of a chew. For a brief respite from the wagyu party we were having, we also ordered some pork belly, jowl and a sashimi platter.

All the plates of meat were genuinely faultless – cut perfectly for grilling, well marbled, never overly oily (in fact we left with our clothes smelling intact!) and I would even go far as to say it was fairly clean eating (for BBQ at least). Topping all of the delicious meat off was the equally delicious dipping sauces, both perfectly mixed and went beautifully with both beef and pork. One was a delicious soy, sesame combo, while the other one was a delicious lemony-garlic sauce with pepper.

Overall a very positive experience, service was great, meat range was delicious and the sauces topped off the whole visit. Definitely recommend coming by to try their yakiniku. There’s also a wagyu omakase available at Choiji that looks amazing and is definitely on the list to try in the future (if we manage to get a booking).

James: 5 out of 5 – Hands down one of my favourite Japanese BBQ experiences to date.

What can I say, except that Choji Yakiniku was an awesome experience and for me, it deserves a 5 star rating. The extensive variety of meat, from different levels of marbling in the Wagyu, to pork options was a huge plus and we were able to try a range of their menu amongst the four of us. Each wagyu selection tasted unique and differed in tenderness and flavour. I particularly enjoyed the mid tier range of wagyu that doesn’t break the bank and has some bite to it. For me, the most expensive and most marbled wagyu all but melted in the mouth without much flavour or time to chew and that’s why I preferred the mid-tier option. I recommend trying as many meats as you can to get the full experience, and find the one most suited to your taste!

The Ox Tongue, Pork Belly & Pork Jowl were great as well, all juicy and flavourful – you get a choice of salt & pepper or bbq sauce to premarinate all your meats with which was pretty neat. A huge winner for me was the two complimentary sauces for each person: a soy, teriyaki, sesame oil combo and a garlic, zesty type of sauce for all the bbq meat. These really elevated the flavours of the meat and very much contributed to my 5 star rating.

It was also great getting the free icecream after allowing them to take a polaroid photo of us – we got 2 icecreams AND the polaroid photo to keep! Win-win for us. Overall I highly recommend visiting Choji Yakiniku in Chatswood and trying their assortment of meat and sides. You’ll get quality cuts of meat, friendly service at reasonably affordable prices (at least for Japanese BBQ)!
