Chatkazz, Harris Park

With a craving for Indian food, we found ourselves lining up outside the famous Chatkazz, for some delicious curries, garlic naan and mango lassi. It’s easy to see why people are so willing to wait for a table here, the curries arrive quick to your table and do not disappoint. (Note this is a vegetarian restaurant).

Ahead of the post we would like to caveat that we are not hugely great at discerning the undoubtedly complex flavours that go into making the dishes at Chatkazz. Unfortunately we are not well versed enough on the different spice elements and sadly unable to name much of them. All we can say is that we enjoyed the delicious food. If you are a huge fan of Indian food, we recommend giving Chatkazz a go since we really enjoyed it!

Melissa: 4.5/5 – there’s a reason why there’s a line outside all the time

This is probably one of my new favourite restaurants for Indian food in Harris Park – the curries here were delicious and filling. Having been to Billus before (see post here), it’s wonderful how unique and varied the different curry dishes can be from restaurant to restaurant.

The pani puri we ordered again as a nice appetiser, with a generous amount of mint flavouring to go with it. This was a larger and more complex pani puri in comparison to Billus. I was a fan of the sweet and sour mix of flavours balanced with the chickpeas. The bhatura was delicious as well.

The masala dosa I felt lacking, the exterior was crispy and golden but this was when I definitely think I preferred to have a meat based dish. The filling was made of what seemed to be spiced mashed potatoes. The dipping sauces were yummy but overall I wouldn’t order this dish again.

Onto the curries: all delicious and the meat element was replaced by cottage cheese which I loved. The butter masala was delicious and catered perfectly to my uneducated palette and the tikka masala had a healthy kick of spice. My overall favourite was the palak paneer which was done a bit differently from Billus with the spinach not blended completely into the curry, leaving a nice textural element. The garlic and butter naan we ordered were also the perfect vessels to go with the curries.

Overall, delicious food, lively atmosphere and definitely worth the wait. I personally would definitely return and highly recommend checking it out.

James 4/5 – first time having vegetarian curry food and I enjoyed it!

To start, the Chole Bhatura was quite enjoyable, chickpea is not something I eat often at all so it was a nice surprise how flavourful they were. The Bhatura was delicious, a fluffy deep fried sourdough bread the perfect partner for the chickpea without filling you up too much either. While the Pani Puri was interesting to try, it was not something I’d get again.

Keen for some Indian curry, I was definitely not left disappointed by Chatkazz which served up two very enjoyable curries in the Paneeer Tikka Misala and the Paneer Butter Masala, both rich and creamy and full of flavour. Looking back I would have preferred to ask for more spice as that extra kick would have further solidified the dishes. The Naan went perfectly, I really enjoyed the Garlic Cheese and Garlic Naan, but personally wouldn’t recommend the Butter Naan as it was a bit overpowering with the butter.

While this was only my second time having Palak Paneer, I really enjoyed this one. A thick, paste like dish of pureed spinach like a creamy spinach curry that I really like as I’m a fan of spinach. Recommend getting this alongside the curries. On the other hand, the Masala Dosa in my opinion was disappointing and we could have gone without it.

Overall would recommend the curries and palek paneer, and can safely say I’d happily return to Chatkazz (if there’s not too big of a queue) and try their wide range of curries and other options.
